Moth Orchid

Women love flowers. I am one of those who admire flowers specially orchids. Almost a month ago I bought an orchid at Trader Joe's. I am a little skeptical because I bought one a year ago and it just died and I really did not know what was the reason. But the one I bought recently really caught my attention. It has two flower stalks that are long and arching. It bears many large white, moth-like flowers. My husband did not want me to buy this flower because it was expensive and he knows that orchids need extra attention compare to some other plants. But I insisted and assured him that I will do my best to keep this plant alive and healthy.  Fortunately, the orchid is still doing good. Just a week ago, I transplanted it in a bigger pot and added some potting mix which is specific for orchids only. I also gave it orchid food and spray (misty) the flowers and leaves with water but I did make sure that the water will not go and stay in the crown of the plant. I place the orchid plant on the area in front on our kitchen sink so that I can see it every now and then.

I've learned as I searched on the net about the Moth orchid that it belongs to genus Phalaenopsis and in the family Orchidaceae. It is one of the most popular orchids in the trade, through the development of many artificial hybrid. These kind of orchids are perfect for beginners, like me because they are easy to grow. It's flowers can last from a month or so.

Here is the caring instruction that I followed (courtesy of Matsui Nursery Inc.):

Light: Bright filtered light. No direct sun.
Feed : Twice a month with half strength balanced liquid feed (orchid food)
Water: Keep evenly moist. Do not allow pot to sit in water avoiding water in crown of the plant.

Have fun growing your own orchid folks!

Natalie

I recently bought an orchid and it came with the same directions you listed. However, I have no idea what "half strength balanced liquid feed" is. Could you please let me know so I don't kill my pretty flower?!

Analou and Bones

To Natalie: It's quite a long explanation what a half-strength balanced liquid feeds means" In fact it is quite complicated because I also researched it on the net. In my own understanding, a complete fertilizer is said to be complete when it contains a balance ratio of Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium. Most commonly used in orchid fertilizer is 20-20-20 (balanced). So, look at your orchid fertilizer if it's contain a complete fertilizer N,P & K , use only half strength. It's better to under fertilize the orchid than over fertilize it. Hope I help you even just a little bit. Let's get ourselves a best of luck in growing our moth orchids.
